It is no secret the town of Riga in Latvia missed the House of the Blackheads in its Town Hall Square. On the city's 800-year anniversary, the House of the Blackheads was restored in keeping with its 1344 design.

The building, also know by the name Melngalvju nam, originally served as a place for guilds of unmarried German merchants throughout the 14th century. The architecture exuded a Gothic style paired with a Dutch Renaissance façade.

However, two major blows would come to the House of the Blackheads in the 1940s. On June 28, 1941, the Germans bombed out the House. Seven years later, the Soviets would completely wipe out the House of the Blackheads, as it was thought to represent decadent German architecture.

After the damage, it was not until the new millennium that Riga decided to restore the building back to magnificence, keeping in with the town's UNESCO World Heritage Site standing. The House of the Blackheads is open daily to the public as a museum from 11:00AM until 5:00PM, except for being closed Mondays. On occasion the space also functions as a concert hall.

Aside from the House of the Blackheads, the town of Riga offers a unique history and position in the world. Sitting on the Baltic Sea, where the Eastern world ultimately meets the Western, Riga became an important trade, finance and culture center. Archeological evidence proves the town of Riga existed well into the 12th century.
