Houston Arboretum and Nature Center, a nature sanctuary covering over 155 acres, is located at 4501 Woodway Drive in the western part of Memorial Park and right off of the 610 West Loop. The center has a Discovery Room (with many hands-on exhibits), a gift shop, reference library and classrooms, along with over 5 miles of hiking trails on the grounds.

Starting in the year 1917, the arboretum was the site of an Army training facility. After the war, the area was dedicated as a park for remembering the fallen soldiers of WWI. Throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s, different moves were made which established the grounds and buildings of the arboretum. In 1967, construction on the Nature Center began. There is also a memorial birding walkway on the grounds and a wildlife garden for those fascinated by insects and other natural species.

Admission to the nature center and arboretum is free, though donations are requested. The grounds and trails are open from 7 am to 7 pm daily. The building is open from 9 am to 5 pm daily and the Nature Shop from 10 am to 4 pm. The Discovery Room is open from 10 am to 4 pm, closed Mondays.
