The Houston Zoo, one of the most visited zoos in the U.S., is located within Hermann Park and covers over 55 acres of ground. With nearly 5,000 animals and more than 900 species, the zoo was originally located in Sam Houston Park and later, after moving to its present location, was called Hermann Park Zoo. The zoo has full AZA accreditation.

Among the major exhibits and habitats, the Reptile and Amphibian Building joins Texas Wetlands and the Natural Encounters exhibit to showcase the zoo’s amphibious creatures. The McGovern’s Children’s Zoo has entire habitats and is geared toward kids. The Fischer Bird Gardens and Pheasant Run put the zoo’s birds on display.

Visitor hours at the zoo are 9 am to 7 pm from March to November and 9 am to 6 pm during the winter months. There are several free days throughout the year, including Black Friday (after Thanksgiving) and New Year’s Day. Admission is $10 for adults (12-64) and $6 for children under 12 and seniors.
