The city of Fredericksburg, Virginia, houses a very peculiar and highly illuminating site known as the Hugh Mercer Apothecary. The building, which was restored by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, contains various interesting displays on the kinds of medical treatments and ingredients that were commonplace in the mid 18th century when Hugh Mercer set up his practice on the same premises (upon the recommendation of George Washington, whom he had earlier met after fleeing Scotland, to do so).

The Hugh Mercer Apothecary is located at 1020 Caroline Street in the heart of Fredericksburg. The establishment not only contains displays on many of the peculiar remedies used back then, but furthermore offers guided tours through the adjacent herb garden to learn about the role of such plants in 18th century medical practices.

The museum is open, from March through October, from 9am-4pm (except Sundays: 12pm-4pm), and from November through December, from 10am-2pm (except Sundays: 12pm-4pm). The price of admission is set at $5 for adult visitors and $2 for children between 6 and 18 years of age.
