The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens make up one of the key cultural destinations in Pasadena. A nonprofit institution founded by Henry Huntington in 1919, the Huntington represents the diverse tastes of this cultured man, whose career as a railroad investor and real estate magnate allowed him to open a magnificent arts center.

The Huntington Library features about 6 million items in its specialty field of British and American Literature. In the field, the library may be the most important in the country. The early manuscript of the Canterbury Tales and another of the Gutenberg Bible (in vellum) are highlights of the collection. A number of important materials on the American West are also in the library collection. The Munger Research Center recently added a great deal of space to the scholarly efforts.

The Huntington Art Collections are just as worthy of praise. The Huntington Art Gallery (formerly the home of the Huntingtons) features one of the top collections of 18th-19th Century French and British art in the country. The Virginia Steele Scott Galleries showcase American painters like Hopper and John Singer Sargent.

The Botanical Gardens cover 120 acres of ground with specialized gardens unwinding in the style of the best-planned parks. Highlights include the Rose Garden, the Desert Garden, the Chinese Garden and the Japanese Garden.

The Huntington is open from Monday to Friday 12 to 4:30 (closed Tuesday) and on weekends and Monday holidays from 10 to 4:30. Weekday admission is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, $10 for students and $6 for children 5-11. Weekend admission is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, $10 for students and $6 for children 5-11.

Accommodations in the area include the Langham Huntington (1401 S Oak Knoll Ave), the Ramada Pasadena (2156 E Colorado Blvd), the Comfort Inn (2462 E Colorado Blvd) and the Vagabond Inn Executive (1203 E Colorado Blvd).
