The Hurricane Monument on Islamorada, in the Florida Keys, is a plaque which was set up to commemorate the lives of World War One veterans and civilians lost in the devastation of the the 1935 hurricane. The memorial was carved out of bedrock, and is made of “keystone” coral slabs from Windley Key or Key Largo Quarry, stone, and concrete. The remains of many of the deceased citizens were cremated and placed in a crypt on the upper level of the memorial, which is adorned with a sculpted relief of a tidal wave and palms waving in the wind. The true number of lives lost in the storm is unknown, but there were 433 confirmed survivors. The plaque has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1995.
