Hyde Park London

Hyde Park is located in the centre of London, United Kingdom. It is one of the Royal Parks of London connected to each other to form one large green lung in the center of the city. This park stretches over 360 acres and is host to many events. It is also a popular spot for swimming, rowing, picnics, horse riding and jogging. Hyde Park is open from 5 AM until midnight all year round and is easily accessible by subway or bus.

In 1536 King Henry VIII acquired the park from the monks of Westminster Abbey and used it primarily for hunting. King Charles I opened the park to the public in 1637.

The Serpentine is a large artificial lake which separates the Hyde Park from the neighboring Kensington Gardens. It was built in 1730 by Queen Caroline, wife of King George II, and is popular for boating and swimming.

The Speaker’s Corner is the most famous attraction in Hyde Park. It was built to create a venue where people would be allowed to speak freely. Every Sunday there are people standing here on a soap box to proclaim their views on political, religious or other items, sometimes interrupted and challenged by their audience.

The Rotten Row is a famous bridle path in the south part of Hyde Park. The road is about six kilometers long and is used as a horse riding, cycling, rollerblading and jogging route. In the 17th century the road was used by William III to get from Kensington Palace to St. James. Because he found this walk was too dangerous, he had oil lamps installed along the route. This is how Rotten Row became the first public road to be lit in England.

London offers many accommodations, the Blakemore Hotel beeing one of the closest ones to Hyde Park. The rates at this hotel start at about 90 Euros per night.
