Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race

Hotels near Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, Anchorage, United States .

The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, commonly referred to by fans and mushers (the men and women at the helm of a sled) as simply the Iditarod, is the most famous and arduous sled dog race in the world. It is carried out every year in Alaska, stretching from the city of Anchorage in the southern part of the state all the way out to Nome in the western portion of Alaska. All told, the race covers some 1,161 miles of rugged Alaskan terrain.

Though the official start is in Anchorage, in reality there is a restart in Willow, close by, where the actual racing gets underway. The majority of spectators observe the beginning and end of the race, though there are checkpoints along the way where limited crowds gather. The fastest race time was achieved in 2002 by musher Martin Buser, who completed the circuit in just less than 9 days' time.

For accommodations near the beginning of the race, there is the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel at 239 West 4th Avenue in Anchorage. Visit the Iditarod's official website at http://www.iditarod.com/ and read more about the event at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iditarod_Trail_Sled_Dog_Race#Last_dash.
