Barely in Germany, on the Luxembourg border, the town of Igel sits in the Rhineland-Palatinate region. Igel's most famous resident, however, may be the Igel Column hovering some 72 feet high above the ground.

The Igel Column stands today as a Roman inspired tomb with its richly carved decorations. Belonging to the Gallo-Roman Secundinii family of the 3rd century, it is easy to see why the column was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Unusual for the time, complex scenes are carved on the Igel Column depicting social, economic, and mythological illustrations. The business carvings note the family's influence and involvement in the cloth trade.

After making a stop in Igel to see the town's column, visitors are put within close proximity to visit Trier, considered to be the oldest town in Germany.
