Igreja do Galo, or Santo Antonio’s Church, dating back to 1766, is located in Poriguar near Natal, the capitol of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte. The historic Church and Monastery Santo Antonio earned the more popular name of Igreja de Galo, Galo meaning rooster for the French relic of a metallic cock gracing its Moorish tower’s peak. Today this baroque structure is home to the Museum of Sacred Art, located next to the Franciscan Convent, and is a true testament to the people of Potiguar’s faith. With several architectural styles being added throughout the course of the centuries it has truly withstood the ages to become not only a historical icon of the town, but a must-see attraction for visitors from the world over. Igreja do Galo is open from 8am-5pm Monday to Friday and Saturdays from 8am-10am. Other nearby attractions include the Genipabu Beach and Dunes, the Parrachos de Maracajau coral reef, Forte dos Reis Magos, Museu Café Filho, Museu Camara Casudo, Aquario Natal and the Pirangi Cashew Tree.
