Ile de Versailles

Ile de Versailles is a Japanese garden in Nantes, France. It is located on a small island in the middle of the river L'Erdre.

The island was originally a marsh which was consolidated with materials dredged during the digging of the canal from Nantes to Brest. Since 1840 until 1986 the island was mostly used for boat building and repairs. The Japanese theme for the island project was chosen in a competition. The new island was inaugurated in September 1987.

Ile de Versailles has a wonderful landscape with rock gardens, pebble beaches, waterfalls and ponds surrounded by exotic plants such as bamboo, bald cypress, rhododendrons, camellias and Japanese cherry trees.

Any Japanese garden has to have a Zen Garden. Ile de Versailles is no exception. The line patterns made in the sand are regarded as an exercise of spiritual discipline.

Located in the heart of the island, House Erdre was inspired by a Japanese tea house. The house is open to everyone and offers visitors the possibility to learn about the rivers flora and fauna, and the island’s history.

Hotel De France is located in a beautifully designed, 18th century building, in the centre of Nantes. The rooms are decorated in classical French style and equipped with satellite TV, a direct-dial telephone and complimentary newspapers. L’Opéra is the hotel’s restaurant and offers traditional and regional cuisine prepared with fresh local ingredients. In the hotel lobby is a charming lounge bar. The rates at this hotel start at about 75 Euros per night.
