The center of downtown Chicago is the site of a modern and multi-use urban development known as the Illinois Center. Situated between Michigan Avenue to the west, Columbus Drive to the east, Wacker Drive to the north and Randolph Street to the south, Illinois Center is a mix of urban housing complexes and corporate buildings and retail centers.

A distinguishing feature of the Illinois Center is that it has three-tiered streets, with separate levels for service vehicles, through traffic and other vehicles. In total, the Illinois Center accounts for four blocks of downtown Chicago close to Lake Michigan, on land that once belonged to the Illinois Central Railroad.

The main buildings making up the Illinois Center are: the Michigan Plaza North, built in 1981; the Park Millennium, built in 2002; the Swissotel Chicago, built in 1989; and the Fairmont Hotel, built in 1987.
