While enjoying the many historical attractions in Springfield, Illinois, be sure to visit the Illinois State Capitol. This French Renaissance building was designed by Cochrane and Garnsey, was built from 1869-1889 and is the sixth state capitol to serve Illinois since 1818. Not only famous for its architecture but its height, the building reaches 361 feet, making it taller than the U.S. Capitol in Washington DC. Today the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today the State Capitol is home to the offices of the Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Comptroller and Treasurer. The building is open daily, from 8am-4pm Monday to Friday, and 9am-3:30pm Saturdays and Sundays. To go on a guided tour, inquire at the information desk on the first floor of the Capitol Rotunda. Parking is available in the Capitol Complex Visitor’s Center parking lot, and meals are available in the Rathskeller cafeteria in the Capitol’s basement. For more historical area attractions head to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, the Old State Capitol State Historic Site, the Dana-Thomas House, Oak Ridge Cemetery, Washington Park Botanical Gardens, the Lincoln Memorial Garden and the Henson Robinson Zoo.
