Imperial Palace Innsbruck

Hotels near Imperial Palace Innsbruck, Innsbruck, Austria .

Austria is known for the enormity of its palaces. The Imperial Palace in Innsbruck easily fits into the club of Austria's grandiose palaces.

In 1396 the plans for the Imperial Palace in Innsbruck were just getting underway. Duke Leopold IV acquired the land from the notorious Habsburg family. From 1495-1519 Emperor Maximilian I enlarged the palace.

Over the years, the Imperial Palace in Innsbruck would undergo varying styles. In 1536, the palace bore a Renaissance design. By 1754, Empress Maria Theresa transformed the Imperial Palace into a Baroque design.

The palace has even risked being demolished altogether. Leopold V wanted to scrap the Imperial Palace, but decided against it due to the Thirty Year's War going on at the time.

Austria's royalty stopped occupying the palace before World War I. The public was allowed inside to view the Imperial Apartments. Today, visitors can do much of the same. The Imperial Palace is now a museum, open daily year-round from 9:00AM until 5:00PM. Admission costs 5.50 Euro per adult.
