Independence Boulevard is the street name given to a long section of Interstate 74 as it passes through Charlotte, North Calolina. Independence Boulevard is one of the major components of the Charlotte-area highway system, giving locals a major urban expressway to navigate along the southern edges of the city.

The drive to build Independence Boulevard started in the 1940s when Ben Douglas (who would go on to be governor of North Carolina in the 1950s) and the State Highway Commission floated a citywide referendum on the project, represented by a $200,000 bond and over $2 million in additional federal funding. By the early 1950s, the highway was fully operational and open to the public.

Starting in the 1980s, Independence Boulevard has been considerably modified, with large sections being converted into all-out freeways. As the city of Charlotte itself has grown and changed over the course of time, so too have the surroundings of this major road (and hence its traffic loads and width).
