Located in the lovely White River State Park of Indianapolis, Indiana, the Indiana State Museum houses exhibits featuring the history of the state of Indiana, running from prehistoric times up to the current day. The museum was started in 1862 as a natural history collection and was established in 1969 as a private fund-raising support organization.

Today, the Indiana State Museum covers over 40,000 square feet of exhibit space and holds more than 300,000 artifacts in its collection. Permanent exhibits include Birth of the Earth, Global Indiana and The Hoosier Way. One of the premier attractions of the museum is the 92 County Walk, which contains an original sculpture of each of the state’s 92 counties. The museum is also the home of one of the state’s only four IMAX theaters.

The Indiana State Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Just steps away from great area hotels such as the Courtyard Indianapolis and SpringHill Suites, tourists looking to get to know more about the area they’re visiting will have no choice but to stop by.
