Indianapolis Motor Speedway is home to racing’s biggest prize, the Indy 500, and is the largest sporting arena in the world with seating potential of up to 400,000. It is located in Speedway, Indiana just outside of Indianapolis. The speedway was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and declared a national landmark in 1986.

Opened in 1909, the first races at Indy were motorcycle contests, slowly giving way to the first automobile races, sanctioned by AAA. As the years passed, the purses grew bigger, hitting a bump in the road during the Great Depression. However, the popularity of the track has only increased since then and today the Formula 1 and NASCAR race events are the most hotly contested in sports.

Visitors are encouraged to visit the Indiana Motor Speedway Hall of Fame on the grounds, as well as the Brickyard Crossing Golf Resort. Plenty of parking is available in speedway grounds. Tickets range from $40 to $180 for the major racing events.

Accommodations in the area include the Candlewood Suites (1152 N White River Pkwy), the Park Place City Centre (1150 N White River), the Wingate by Wyndham (5797 Rockville Road) and the Comfort Inn West (5855 Rockville), all about two miles from the speedway in town. Visitors can also stay at the Brickyard Crossing Resort.
