Innere Stadt

Innere Stadt is one of the municipal districts of Vienna in Austria and until 1850 it was divided into four quarters, namely, Stubenviertel or the North East Quarter, Karntner Viertel or the South East Quarter, Widmerviertel or the South West Quarter and Schottenviertel or the North West Quarter.
Owing to the fact that the district occupies a central position in Vienna geographically, it is the location of headquarters of various corporations. It is deemed to be the largest employment pool with a workforce of over 100,000.
Some of the places of interest in Innere Stadt are Hofburg Imperial Palace, Graben, Burgtheater, Maria am Gestade, Peterskirche, Virgilkapelle, Albertina, etc.
Innere Stadt, during the 19th century had a population of about 73,000. Since then, until about 2001, it saw a steady decline in population and reached almost 17,000. Even though there is a slight increasing trend in population these days Innere Stadt is still considered to be one of the least populated districts in Vienna.
