This 2000 year old fort is visible from the Al Maqaa which served as a watchtower for bandits who came from the sea. The Al Maqtaa Fort is a historic site that has undergone a number of renovations in the past. The fort is close to various attractions in Abu Dhabi, including Heritage Village, the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Mosque and the Hill Archaeological Gardens. The Qasr Al Hosn (Sheikh Zayed 1st St, Abu Dhabi City) is also nearby.

The Heritage Village is located near the Abu Dhabi breakwater and features the reconstruction of an old well and irrigation systems. The village also contains a number of shops that sell anything from pottery to spices. A museum is also located inside the village that houses several diving tools, jewelry, cooking implements and pottery artifacts.

Another nearby point of interest is the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Mosque which is the most imposing landmark in Abu Dhabi today, not to mention one of the most beautiful. The Hill Archeological gardens are accessible from the Dubai road. Another attraction is the The Qasr Al Hosn (Sheikh Zayed 1st St, Abu Dhabi City), which is also known as The White Fort lies next to the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation.

There is not much in the way of hotels and leisure activities in the fort as well as sightseeing and visiting the various attractions. Hotels include Al Raha Beach, Le Meredien Abu Dhabi and the Cristal hotel. Al Raha Beach hotel is located at the famous Corniche Strip and is linked to the Al Raha Mall.
