International Marionettes Museum

The International Marionettes Museum in Palermo’s Via Butera I is an impressive display of puppetry at its finest. Mostly from Sicilian origins, the puppets found inside the museum are antique, dating back to the time of Norman Sicily.

The museum’s proponent was Antonio Pasqualino whose passion for puppetry has gathered items from around Sicily, Naples and Catania. Most of the puppets belonged to the traditional puppet opera in Sicily, but there are a number of objects coming other countries such as Indonesia, India and other Asian origins. Fascinating examples include Rajasthan’s two-string puppets and marionette masks from Africa. Every display brings a closer look into the detailed work of puppetry from all over the world.

The museum is open Mondays to Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and resumes at 4-7 p.m. after the traditional mid-day rest. Within a mile radius, Palermo’s delightful attractions are easily accessible. These sights include a deluge of palazzos, old churches, gardens and more museums. Hotels in this area range from boutique, business, traditional and self-catering lodgings.
