Located in Plano's historic downtown, the museum is housed in what used to be a major stop on the Texas Electric Railway, which connected far-flung towns in Texas like Fort Worth, Waco, and Plano through a high-speed train station. Ever since the 1870s, the railway was offering an easier and faster way of getting around Texas, which shaped not just the state's economy, but also its culture.

The Interurban Railway Museum offers a look into that world, with numerous exhibits that feature an extensive collection of pictures, displays, and artifacts from the station and the railway's past. There are a number of special events at The Interurban Railway Museum, including a children's story hour every Friday.

The museum opened in the 1990s, when the station underwent a historically accurate renovation and re-opened as a place of learning. The last train to roll through left the station on New Year's Eve in 1948.

The Interurban Railway Museum is open Monday through Friday, from ten in the morning until two in the afternoon, and on Saturday from one until five. Admission is free, and tours can be arranged ahead of time.
