The airport sits on reclaimed land and prior to the installment of a flood protection scheme, has been experiencing problems related to flooding.

During the Second World War, the airport served as a backup airport for the military. This resulted in several Antarctic flights landing at Invercargill Airport. Today, the airport continues to be visited by the RNZAF and the ANG as a part of their flight diversion training.
