The Iracema Statue – Mucuripe is a local landmark well-known by visitors and locals in the surrounding area of Fortaleza. Iracema is the protagonist of an eponymous novel by native Brazilian Jose de Alencar. The novel centers on the characters of Iracema and Martim Soares Moreno, who, as husband and wife, were two of the first explorers of the area now known as Fortaleza. This particular statue was crafted out of concrete by Corbiniano Lins, and depicts the Moreno family, including their son and dog. The statue has been somewhat controversial due to the sculptor's modernist approach, which explains its distorted proportions. Nonetheless, it has been on display since the 1960s and is perhaps the area's best-known landmark. Several statues of the beloved Iracema are located around the city, and the strategic Mucuripe beach one is said to be looking out vigilantly at the sea, for the return of Martim Moreno.
