Völklingen Ironworks, while not in operatio today, still manages to drum up impressive work. The site remains a rarity as the only intact example in Western Europe and North America of integrated ironworks.

In 1873 Julius Bunch, and iron and steel engineer, built an ironworks near Völklingen. By 1890, the factory was the biggest steel girder producer in the German Empire. During World War II, thousands were employed at Völklingen, enduring harsh hard labor and bad conditions.

In 1994, Völklingen Ironworks became the first industrial monument on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, drawing in tourists to visit the Völklingen daily. Tours are given of the Ironworks from Monday through Friday 8:30AM until 5:00PM.
