One of the most famous landmarks in downtown Hartford is The Isham-Terry House. Open for visitors by special appointment, this regal house on High Street is like stepping back in time to Hartford the way it once was.

The house itself has a rich history. In 1896, Dr. Oliver Isham bought Hartford's Italianate Villa, originally constructed in the 1850s. The Isham-Terry House was used as Dr. Isam's residence and office, and he shared the living space with his two sisters, who remained until well into the 1970s. The Isham sisters are particularly famous amongst the city's conservationists for their refusal to vacate the premises even while so many other residences around the property were undergoing swift renovations as part of the new rush to take back downtown neighborhoods.

The reason that stepping foot into the house is more like stepping back in time than most other private residences is that the level of preservation of original touches is truly astonishing. From the stained-glass windows, gaslight fixtures, and lovingly maintained floors, the whole house truly is of another era.

Visitors interested in touring the house, where paintings, clocks, and other old artifacts are still displayed, along with the doctor's entire medical set-up, can make an appointment by contacting Connecticut Landmarks.
