Ishigaki Airport is a third class airport located 1.9 km from the center of Ishigaki city, a city in the Okinwana Prefecture. It receives flights to major cities on the Japanese Mainland, as well as to nearby Japanese islands. It was opened in 1943 for military use by the Imperial Japanese Army, but was converted to a civilian airport in the 1950s. Serving about 1.8 million passengers a year, Ishigaki airport is the busiest third class airport in Japan. There has also been a steady increase of flights to and from the Yaeyema islands which is enjoying a tourism boom. However, because it is a third class airport it cannot accommodate planes larger than a Boeing 737. It also does not have facilities for handling standard cargo containers.

Ishigaki Island is a good place to sample Japanese beaches and marine life. Popular activities here include diving, snorkeling, river and jungle explorations, in between wining and dining in the island’s many restaurants and bars. A popular diving spot is Manta Scramble near Kabira Bay where one can see large congregations of manta rays.

For accommodation options, there are a lot to choose from. One can stay at the Royal Marine Palace or at the Fusaki Resort Village. The Marine palace is just 15 minutes away by car while Fusaki Resort Village is 20 minutes from Ishigaki airport. Beach hotel royal Sunshine is 15 minutes away from the airport and features comfortable amenities such as a large pool and a Japanese public bath. This place is one great place from which one can watch the sunset. The Family Lodge Marine style is one of the cheaper options for hotels and offers trailer-house style accommodations. It also has an English speaking staff and is located 20 minutes away from the airport.
