To the west of popular Mykonos in Greece, ancient history fans can get their fill on the Island of Delos. Sandals and sneakers walk on what was consider hollowed ground to the Greeks, as the island was believed to be the birthplace of Apollo, son of Zeus.

Evidence surrounds that the Island of Delos has been home to many over thousands of years. Neolithic dwellings note inhabitants to the island in 3000 B.C. The Macedonians would turn the Island of Delos into a trade and commercial hot spot by the end of the 4th century B.C. Under the Romans, the island grew in population, accommodating Greeks, Italians, Phoenicians, Syrians, Egyptians, Palestinians and Jews.

By 8 A.D. however, the Island of Delos began to fall into disarray, and was truly destroyed shortly thereafter by the Ottoman Empire.

After a 30-minute boat ride from Mykonos, visitors can walk through all the ancient history first hand. The entire island has even been declared a national museum. As the sun beats down, travelers can walk through ruins and temples, including the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Theater Districts, and the Lion District. The Lion District includes over 9 lions composed of Naxian marble.
