Istanbul Archaeology Museums

Istanbul Archaeology Museums has an overwhelming collection of extraordinary objects that trace the origins of Turkey, a country that straddles both Asia and Europe. Included in the artifacts, amounting to some 1 million, are excellent Greek and Roman finds. Three buildings house the exhibitions that are inside the first court of Topkapi Palace.

The main highlight of the collections is the Alexander sarcophagus, so-named due to the intricate carvings depicting his life and battles, which was later found out to be not the great Emperor at all. Another treasured object is the Sarcophagus of the Crying Women, having detailed carvings of women in mourning.

Comprehensive and well presented, the exhibition related to Istanbul’s history continues to be a popular feature of the museum. The collection includes maps, drawings and archaeological findings that date back to prehistoric until 15th century Byzantine era. There are other sections of interest such as the Troy exhibit with its sculptures from Syria, Cyprus and Palestine. The Museum of Ancient Orient is another daunting array of curiosities showing early civilisations of Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Arab continent and Egypt.
