Istiklal Avenue

Istiklal Avenue (in Turkish, Istiklal Caddesi) is one of the most famous avenues in Istanbul, Turkey, attended by nearly 3 million people on a weekend day. It is located in the historic district of Beyoglu, and it is an elegant pedestrian street about three miles long, with nice houses, exquisite boutiques, music stores, book stores, art galleries, cinemas, theaters, libraries, cafes, pubs, night clubs with live music, historical patisseries, chocolate shops and restaurants. The avenue, surrounded by the unique nineteenth century Turkish architecture, extends from the neighborhood around the medieval Genoese Galata Tower to Taksim Square.

A large number of European embassies, consulates exist here today as well as Art Nouveau evidence in the passages and in the business fronts. Over the entire length of Istiklal Caddesi, the route is a revitalized by a historic tram. Approximately in the middle of the avenue, is Galatasaray Square. Other landmarks are: Istanbul Congress Center, Saint Sophia, Taksim Square, Kalamis & Fenerbahçe Marinas, Atakoy Marina, Suleymaniye Mosque, Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque. Some beauiful museums are in the neighborhood as well: Beylerbeyi Palace and the Archeological Museum. The place is abundant in shopping areas such as: the Grand Bazaar, Cevahir Mall, Istiklal Street, Capitol Shopping Center or Kanyon Shopping Centre. Large stadiums and arenas are located nearby: Sukru Saracoglu Stadium, Ali Sami Yen Stadium, BJK Inonu Stadium and Fenerbahce Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.
