Izmir Archaeological Museum

Having been relocated three times due to the ever-growing collection, the Izmir Archaeological Museum feels right at home in the 5,000 square meter area in Konak. Since its last transfer in 1984, the museum has amassed veritable treasures from all over Turkey.

The collection features artifacts yielded from major archaeological digs around ancient enclaves such as Bayrakli, Ephesus, Miletus, Pergamum and Sardis. Some of the significant objects include the statues of Zeus and Demeter, pottery, Sidamara sarcophagi, vases from Western Anatolia, gold, silver and other precious stones. The exhibit features things from around 1,000 BC up to the Ottoman period.

The museum is open during Tuesdays to Sundays from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, resuming at 1 to 5 p.m. Izmir is Turkey’s largest port city, thus expect to find plenty of leisure activities on hand. Hotels and resorts are a blend of contemporary and exotic, offering a good range of modern amenities.
