Jabal al-Qal'a

Hotels near Jabal al-Qal'a, Amman, Jordan .

Amman, in Jordan, is a city built on top of seven hills; thus, it is often referred to as “The City of Seven Hills”. One of these hills is the Jabal al-Qal'a which means the Citadel Hill or the Hill of the Citadel. It is an important religious and military site.

Jabal al-Qal'a is built on an L-shaped hill with the citadel more or less following the contours of the hill. Along with rest of Amman, the hill was inhabited as early as the Neolithic Period – that means that it is part of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited places. The citadel was built during the Bronze Age – around 1800 B.C.

On top of the Hill of the Citadel, the ruins of the Temple of Hercules can be found. This temple was built around 162 to 166 A.D. with massive pillars and columns; it faces east.

Attractions near the city include the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ, the Dead Sea, Wadi Rum geological rock formations, Qasr Al-Abd or palace of the Slave, and the Petra archaeological site (a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World).
