Constituting one of the principal historic landmarks within the city of New Orleans, Jackson Square (originally known as Place d'Armes, which some continue to refer to it as) is an urban park/square that occupies one city block in the heart of the French Quarter of town. As of 1960, Jackson Square is one of the many National Historic Landmarks in New Orleans, and it was originally designed in 1721, based on the Parisian Place des Vosges.

Jackson Square overlooks the Mississippi River and is flanked by such historic sites as the St. Louis Cathedral and the Presbytere and Cabildo (part of the Louisiana State Museums system). Within the square, it is common to find many artists painting or performing, and indeed Jackson Square is regularly used during warmer months for putting on open air concerts and other performances.
