Travelers flying in and out of the greater Jacksonville area will be spending at least a little bit of time at Jacksonville Airport. Located north of the city's downtown, be advised that, to ensure that no flights are missed, those flying out of Jacksonville should allow ample time to arrive at the airport, since the drive from many of the city's neighborhoods is rather long.

Originally built in the 1960s to accommodate a rapidly expanding metropolitan area, Jacksonville International Airport did not expand much until the 1980s, when the population of Jacksonville was very much on the rise, and a lot of extra airline service was added.

Those who live at Neptune and Jacksonville Beach, was well as travelers as far away as Gainesville and Tallahassee often fly out of Jacksonville due to the large number of direct and connecting international flights to major cities. A number of airlines fly to JAX, including Delta, AirTran, Northwest, Continental, JetBlue, United, American, US Airways, and Southwest. International charter flights are also a common occurrence.

The airport is split into three different concourses, each with a large number of gates. They are all recently renovated and offer a variety of bars and restaurants, as well as an ample number of Starbucks locations. The main part of the airport, where ticketing and baggage are located has two different levels. There is on-site car rental, as well as large short-term and long-term parking lots.

A number of hotels are on the premises of the airport, including The Clarion Airport Conference Hotel, The Red Roof Inn Jacksonville Airport, and The Microtel Inn and Suites.
