Ludwig II was noted for his eccentric personality and his impressive castles. Though not as famous as his other castles, Schachen Hunting Castle is a popular attraction. A hunting lodge for the king, the king also held parties in this summer retreat.

Located in the scenic Bavarian Alps, this hunting lodge can only be accessed after a 3-hour hike from the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Route going to this hunting castle offers the most magnificient mountain views and other sceneries.

It is not as big as a typical castle but rather resembles a Swiss chalet. This hunting lodge turned museum is only open from the end of May to the first part of October. Every 24th of August, Schachen Hunting Castle holds a special celebration in honor of the king's birthday.

Tours around the place are scheduled every 11am, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. Guided tours around the musuem are available in German but tour guides can also speak fluent English.

The "Turkish Hall" complete with gold finishing, colured galss windows, peacock feathers and carpets should never be mised during tours. It is said that Ludwig II was fond of Turkish art. The rest of the castle showcases different memorabilias from the notorious ruler.

With breathtaking sceneries surrounding the castle, nature is the main atrraction. There is also a Botanical Garden close to the castle.

You can stay in a family-run guesthouse close to the castle. This guesthouse has 70 rooms for rent with a restaurant and of course, a beerhouse. Those who prefer to go back to the centre of Garmisch-Partenkirchen can easily find hotels and other accommodations at reasonable prices.
