Though James K. Polk, the 11th president of the United States, may not be the most well-known president in American history, he served as commander and chief during a vital time. He was the last strong pre-Civil War president and is noted for his foreign policy success, including victory in the Mexican-American War and the annexation of California. The James K. Polk Historic Site commemorates the president’s accomplishments and is located on the land once owned by his parents. It includes the reconstruction of typical homestead buildings that are authentically furnished.
Attractions at the site include guided tours, picnic facilities, a visitors center and a gift shop. Special events are also held throughout the year and can be consulted at www.hchistoricsites.org.
The James K. Polk Historic Site is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There is no set admission fee, though donations are accepted. Visitors interested in staying nearby should check into Quality Suites Pineville or the Hampton Inn & Suites.
