The Japanese Friendship Garden, located at 2215 Pan American Plaza in the middle of Balboa Park in beautiful San Diego, California, got its start back in the early 1900s. The 1915 Panama-California Exposition was the precursor to the garden and park, which boasts gorgeous hills and trails, traditional Japanese rock gardens, pavilions, bonsai trees, koi ponds, waterfalls, well-manicured landscapes, and arts and crafts exhibits. The Tea Pavilion at the entrance to the garden delights visitors with a taste of real Japanese cuisine, which may include a starter of miso soup or a salad, followed by a delectable selection of sushi, noodle bowls, and rice dishes, and accompanied by a traditional Japanese tea. Events and special programs put on by the park vary, but musical events and botanical talks provide something for every age and specific interest.

Hours vary by season, but usually begin at 10 AM.

Admission is $3 for adults, $2.50 for seniors, $2 for students and military, and free for kids 6 and under.
