Jardin des Vestiges

Jardin des Vestiges is a garden in the heart of Marseilles, France. The garden consists of a series of archaeological remains from the Greek period. They were discovered in 1967 during the cork done for the construction of a shopping mall. Surrounded on three sides by the shopping center, the garden was built to showcase the excavations. Most of the elements found are displayed in the History Museum of Marseilles.

The horn of the old port is now planted with grass and lies before the city walls. The docs that are currently visible are 180 meters long and date from Roman times. The stairs used for unloading of goods are also visible. A ship of 23 meters dating from the third century was discovered during the excavation and can be seen on display in the History Museum of Marseilles.

In the east part of the garden is a large square basin made in the early second century. It is about 15 square meters and was used for water vessels. This basin was filled with water captured by a pipe from a spring. The part of the pipeline that could be identified is more than 100 meters long.

Two funerary enclosures were discovered in the north part, each with a rectangular surface of 100 square meters. The tombs date from the fourth century BC. A crematory was also discovered and was dated back from the third century BC.
