Jardin du Luxembourg

Jardin du Luxembourg is one of the most popular parks in Paris. It is located near the Sorbonne University and stretches across approximately 55 acres. The park was designed in 1612 in French style and was opened to the public in the 19th century.

The Grand Bassin is an octagonal pond in the centre of the park, where children can play with remote controlled toy boats which can be rented nearby. The pond is surrounded by alleys laid out in a geometrical pattern. Visitors can get hold of one of the many chairs and take them in the exact spot where they want to sit.

The park has two fountains which are worth seeing. Fontaine de Medicis is the most famous one. It was built in 1624 in the baroque style and is located at the end of a small pond at the northeastern side of the park. In an extension at the southern end of the park, called the Jardins de l'Observatoire, visitors can see Fontaine de l'Observatoire. It was built in 1873 and includes a statue of a globe supported by four women, each representing a continent.

Palais du Luxembourg (Luxembourg Palace) was built between 1615 and 1627, at the northern end of Jardin du Luxembourg. It was constructed for Marie de Medicis, mother of Louis XIII. Because she was of Italian descent, the palace was designed in a Florentine style. During the French Revolution the palace served as a prison, and now houses the French Senate.
