James Barry Munik Hertzog, more popularly known as JBM Hertzog, was a General of the Second Anglo-Boer War and a Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa serving from 1924 to 1939. Although he strongly encouraged Afrikaner culture development, he also insisted that both English and Dutch be taught in school, something that met bitter opposition.

Because of the contribution of JBM Hertzog to the history of the country, a statue in his likeness was erected on the gardens of the Union Building in Pretoria. The house in which he had lived in from 1895 to 1924 was converted into a museum called the JBM Hertzog House. The house itself lent to history during the 1914 South African Rebellion when his own friends protected him by posting at the branches of the tree just outside his dining room window.

Today, the JBM Hertzog House is a tourist spot which is open for viewing from Tuesdays to Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There are several hotels located close to the JBM Hertzog House – the New Protea Hotel Bloemfontein, Palm Lodge, Hobbit Boutique Hotel, and the Flo Ben Guest House. Other attractions in Bloemfontein include the Anglican Cathedral, National Afrikaans Literary Museum, and the Twin-Spired Church.
