Constituting one of the most striking architectural monuments in the capital city of Washington, D.C., the Jefferson Memorial is located on the southern shore of the city's Tidal Basin, no more than a stone's throw from the Potomac River and the Memorial Bridge. The memorial honors Jefferson, one of the more eloquently spoken and recognizable Founding Fathers of the nation, with excerpts taken from the US Constitution and Declarations of Independence (which he helped pen) flanking a massive statue of him in the center of the memorial building.

The Jefferson Memorial was begun in 1938-9 and finished in 1943 (except for the final bronze statue, which was included in 1947 when material shortages imposed by the Second World War were no longer effective), with a design reminiscent of ancient Greco-Roman temples and pantheons. The memorial is open to the public without fee or reservation and is operated by the National Park Service as part of the division of the National Mall and Memorial Parks. As of 1966, the Jefferson Memorial is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and has consistently been rated as one of the most beloved architectural symbols in the nation.
