The Jeita Grotto is a compound of two karstic limestone caves located in Jeita, Lebanon about 18 kilometers from the country’s capital, Beirut. A national symbol, top tourist destination, and official entry to the New 7 Wonders of the World in which was chosen as finalist, the Grotto is also of economic, social, and cultural importance not only to Jeita but also to the rest of the country.

With the Jeita Grotto being a major tourist attraction, the firm that runs the grotto has created jobs for locals and revenues for the municipality and to the Lebanese Ministry of Finance. Also, the waters that run through the caves have provided the inhabitants with fresh drinking water.

Signs of the caves being inhabited in prehistoric times have been discovered. Still, it was Reverend William Thomson who was credited with the discovery of the cave in 1836. Years later, Lebanese and foreign speleologists discovered the upper galleries and several more kilometers of the cave chambers. The largest explored cave in the Middle East, the discovered part of the Jeita Grotto runs 6,200 meters from the entrance and 2,130 of the upper galleries.

Jeita Grotto is open in summer at 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and in winter, except Mondays, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
