Jekerkwartier

Jekerkwartier is a neighborhood in a district located in the southern part of the city center of Maastricht, Netherlands .The district is bounded by the Inner and Kommelkwartier in the north, the district Biesland in the west, the neighborhoods Jekerdal and Villa Park in the south and river Meuse in the east. The name of the district comes from the Jeker River that flows through the district and into the Meuse. Before streets, blocks and buildings appeared, Jekerkwartier was a low-lying area, a joining point of some branches of the Jeker River.

Jekerkwartier consists mostly of 17th and 18th century houses, often on medieval foundations. It is a largely medieval street plan. The neighborhood has a large number of monuments, the most important are: The Gothic Oude Kerk Minor, The Gray Sister Monastery now Natural Museum Maastricht, the Walloon Church, the Pest House or the Lion Windmill, or even the medieval city walls with the Helpoort, Onze-Lieve-Vrouwewal, Pater Vink Torentje, the Port Waerachtig Bastions and the Five Heads. In the 20th century urban renewal projects area appeared, but almost nowhere in an abrupt manner. Some of the modern architecture interesting constructions are: Jan van Eyck Academy, The lecture hall of the University of Maastricht in the garden of the Jesuit convent at Tongersestraat.
The western part of the district is known as students’ district. The Academy Theater Maastricht, the Maastricht Conservatory and the Jan van Eyck Academy are located in the western part of the Jeker quarter. This, and the presence of a large number of student houses, pubs and eateries, has led to this part of town known as the Quartier Latin of Maastricht. Jekerkwartier It is of great importance for tourism with its picturesque streets with small shops and restaurants, many monumental buildings, the Natural History Museum, City Park and other historic ramparts. The quiet, understated character of the area covers many visitors’ tastes.
