Jelling stones

Hotels near Jelling stones, Vejle, Denmark .

The Jelling Stones in Jelling, Demark serve almost as Denmark's own hard-copy of a birth certificate.
In 965 King Harad Bluetooth erected the larger of the Jelling stones to commemorate his parents, King Gorm and Queen Thyra. The smaller of the Jelling stones was created as King Gorm's own memorial to his wife. King Gorm was the first king of all of Denmark. To the naked eye the Jelling stones may not see like much, but the images and words inscribed on the stones carry large implications.

King Harad depicted the unification of Denmark on the stone, along with clues that the Danes officially became Christians at that time. The larger stone shows an image of Christ, being the oldest example of a Christ image in Scandinavia. The actual name Denmark is inscribed on the Jelling stones. The stone highlights proof of a change from pagan beliefs to Christian.

The Jelling Stones lie in the Jelling churchyard, sitting on the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
