Jesuitenplatz

Hotels near Jesuitenplatz, Koblenz, Germany .

Jesuitenplatz in Koblenz, Germany carries a deep history. Much more than a square in the town along the Rhine, Jesuitenplatz's origins go back to the end of the 16th century.

The Archbishop of Trier Jacob III von Eltz ordered the area to be cleared by the Cistercians. The space was to be used by the Jesuits, hence its name. In the 17th century, the Jesuits built a church in the square, the Bernhardus Church. It was destroyed in 1944, but rebuilt in 1958. The bells still resound throughout Jesuitenplatz.

Nearby the old church, another building served as a grammar school to the Jesuits. By 1895 however, it would function as the town hall.

By 1899, the square was redesigned with not a statue to the Jesuits but rather to Johannes Müller, a famous anatomist and physiologist born in Koblenz.

Today, Jesuitenplatz is without a question characterized by Baroque facades on its neighboring buildings. For those that want to stay near Jesuientplatz, several hotels crowd the area at around 60 Euros a night.
