The Geneva skyline may feature the norm of buildings and museums like any other city, but it uniquely houses a water fountain, the Jet d'Eau that reaches the skyscraper height of 140 meters.

132 gallons of water per second jet up to the sky in Geneva. The Jet d'Eau raises itself as one of the largest fountains in the world and one of the city's most famous symbols. Two powerful motor pumps weighing 16 tons allow for the Jet d'Eau to sprout up.

The fountain was installed in 1891 by the city of Geneva. Its history goes back a little bit farther than that. In 1886 a company at the end of the lake would pump water under pressure to power craftsmen's machines. By nightfall, the need was lessened. To diminish the pressure, a little hole allowed water to exit, reaching a few meters height above ground.

This idea was moved to its present location on the Rade in Geneva, just a few minutes from the original spouting water fountain.

The Jet d'Eau lights up in the evening. Visitors that get a little too close can find themselves taking a shower in the middle of Geneva.
