Jewellery Quarter

Jewellery Quarter is an area located in the Ladywood district, in the southern part of Hockley area, in Birmingham, England. It has a population of nearly 3000 people and an area of 264 acres.
It is that place in Birmingham where jewellery and coins are produced. However, this industry has suffered a decline starting with the 20th century. Today there are about 700 businesses related to jewellery developing in this Quarter.

Jewellery Quarter has become a touristic area not too long ago, in the 1980s, therefore the appearance of the district has changed along the past 30 years. Many surface car parks appeared, attractive shop front designs were prepared by the city council, three metal sculptures made out of metal designed by Anuradha Patel were sited in Hall Street and a lot of museums were also created. Such examples are: The Museum of the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, St. Paul's Gallery, Colony ,The National Sea Life Centre. There are two famous cemeteries in the area: Warstone Lane and the Key Hill Cemeteries, closed to burials at present, which have also developed into a touristic attraction. A popular area is the Millennium Point and another landmark, the Big Peg, formerly called the Hockley Centre which houses famous artists’ exhibitions. Transportation inside the district is ensured by the existent subway network and bus lines.
