Jinan University is the oldest academic institution in China. Said to be built during the Qing Dynasty, its school motto then and now, is “loyalty, sincerity, integrity and respect,” in parallel with pursuit of “modernization, internationalization and comprehensiveness.” The university has four (4) campuses. The main campus is located in the city of Guangzhou. The university’s role in the progress of China is quite important, as its campuses in Shenzhen and Zhuhai are right in the hot economic zone of the country.

When it was founded, the university’s initial and primary goal was to strengthen the emotional bond between citizens overseas, so it has since been under the administration of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council together with the Chinese Ministry of Education.

Jinan University has had its share of trial in history. It was closed in 1949 after China was re-established as a communist state. The university was only re-established in 1958. Nonetheless, its pursuit for knowledge has made this academic institution a truly a center of learning, for like it’s name, it continues to reach southward, so that wisdom may be spread throughout the world.

At present, there are around 35,000 students enrolled in Jinan University. The student population is composed of mixed races. Its twenty (20) colleges offer almost every course in all disciplines, so that picking a major is never a problem once a student decides to go for Jinan University.
