Alameda Central is a giant public park in downtown Mexico City near the Palace of Bellas Artes, corner of Hidalgo and Juarez. Formerly an Aztec marketplace, the park was transformed into a European style park with fountains and paved walkways, the work of viceroy Velasco, beginning in 1592. The site of early Inquisition activities in Mexico, a corner of the park was known as El Quemadero, or “burning spot.” Later torn up by another viceroy, the park became something of a resting point for nobles in Mexico City in the late 1700s. By 1821, with independence finally won, Alameda Central took on more of a plebian character and was the site of rousing public celebrations. Travelers can reach the park via public transportation on the metro, Bellas Artes stop.
