John Fitzgerald Kennedy Memorial

Hotels near John Fitzgerald Kennedy Memorial, Dallas, United States .

Located just 200 yards from where President John F. Kennedy was shot in 1963, just west of downtown Dallas, the John F. Kennedy Memorial was built by a friend of the Kennedy family in 1970. The structure is made of concrete, 50 feet long by 50 feet wide, with 30 foot tall walls and two small openings at opposite ends of the memorial. Inside of the walls is a simple black marble slab, with an inscription in gold that simply reads the President’s name, as requested by First Lady Jacquelyn Kennedy Onassis.

Some see the Memorial as an open tomb, others as a place for quiet contemplation, with artist Philip Johnson describing the John F. Kennedy Memorial as “a permanent tribute to the joy and excitement of one man’s life” rather than a reminder of the pain brought on by his death. The Memorial is located on Market Street, between Main Street and Commerce Street.

The John F. Kennedy Memorial is open to the public, free of charge, and does not have opening or closing hours. Local hotel accommodations include the Crowne Plaza Hotel Dallas Downtown, Hyatt Regency Downtown Dallas, the Hotel Lawrence, and the Magnolia Hotel Dallas.
