Built in 1930 as a gift from leading Chicago businessman John G. Shedd, the John G. Shedd Aquarium is a public aquarium located on Lake Michigan in Chicago. Commonly know simply as the Shedd Aquarium, it was the first inland aquarium to house a permanent saltwater exhibit, having transported 1,000,000 gallons of seawater from the Caribbean by train in 1930.

Today the Shedd Aquarium is one of Chicago’s most popular destinations, with over 2 million people visiting annually. The aquarium is home to over 25,000 fish, 1,500 species of animal, and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located at 1200 South Lake Shore Drive, the Shedd Aquarium looks over Lake Michigan, and is within easy walking distance of the Field Museum of Natural History, the Adler Planetarium, Grant Park, and Soldier Field.

The Shedd Aquarium is open weekdays from 9 A.M. until 5 P.M., and weekends from 9 A.M. until 6 P.M. Parking is available at the Soldier Field north garage at rates starting at $16 for four hours, and the CTA #146 bus also serves the aquarium. Admission ranges from $17.95 to $24.95, with discounts available for military, senior citizens, teachers, students, and Chicago residents.
